In communist Poland, if you were a scout, a son of a soldier who fought in the uprising, a land-owner or a pre-war police officer; if you had family abroad or had a priest in the family, you spent your military service working in the mines or at a quarry, rather than at the barracks. More than 200 thousand young Poles shared that fate between 1949 and 1959.
